He studied for five years in See also:Parma, at the Jesuit See also:College, and afterwards from 1698 at See also:Rome; and in 1703–1704 he took See also:part as a volunteer in the See also:war of See also:succession, fighting on the Bavarian See also:side at Donauwerth In 1709 he began at See also:Padua along with Apostolo See also:Zeno and Valisnieri the Giornale dei letterati d'Italia, a See also:literary periodical which had but a See also:short career; and subsequently an acquaintance with the actor See also:Riccoboni led him to exert himself for the improvement of dramatic See also:art in See also:Italy. His See also:Merope, a tragedy, appeared in 1713; Teatro italiano, a small collection of See also:works for presentation on the See also:stage, in, 1723–1725; and Le Ceremonie, an See also:original See also:comedy, in 1728. From 1718 he became specially interested in the See also:archaeology of his native See also:town, and his investigations resulted in the valuable Verona illustrata (1731–1732)• Maffei afterwards devoted four years to travel in See also:France, See also:England, See also:Holland and See also:Germany. He died at Verona on the 11th of See also:February 1755. A See also:complete edition of his works appeared at See also:Venice (28 vols., 8vo) in 1790.
