MAIMANA , a See also:town and khanate of Afghan See also:Turkestan. The town is situated See also:loo m. S.W. of See also:Balkh, and only some 25 M. from the frontier of See also:Russian Turkestan. It is about two-thirds the See also:size of See also:Herat, square built and surrounded by a ruined See also:wall and See also:moat. The khanate was for See also:long in dispute between See also:Bokhara and See also:Kabul, but in 1868 Abdur Rahman laid See also:siege to the town, and it was compelled to come to terms. Its See also:political status as an Afghan See also:province was definitely fixed by the Russo-Afghan boundary See also:commission of 1885. The inhabitants are chiefly Uzbegs.
