MANISTEE , a See also:city and the See also:county-seat of Manistee county, See also:Michigan, U.S.A., on the Manistee See also:river (which here broadens into a small See also:lake) near its entrance into Lake Michigan, about 114 M. W.N.W. of See also:Grand Rapids. Pop. (189o), 12,812; (1900), 14,260 (4966 See also:foreign-See also:born); (1904, See also:state See also:census), 12,708; (191o), 12,381. It is served by the Pere See also:Marquette, the Manistee & Grand Rapids, the Manistee & See also:North-Eastern, and the Manistee & See also:Luther See also:railways, and by steamboat lines to See also:Chicago, See also:Milwaukee and other lake ports. The channel between Lake Manistee and Lake Michigan has been considerably improved since 1867 by the Federal See also:government. There is a See also:United States See also:life-saving station at the See also:harbour entrance. The city has a county normal school, a school for the See also:deaf and dumb, a domestic See also:science and See also:manual training school, a business See also:college, and a See also:Carnegie library. Manistee is a summer resort, with See also:good See also:trout streams and well-known brine-See also:baths. One mile from the city limits, on Lake Michigan, is See also:Orchard See also:Beach, a bathing resort, connected with the city by electric railway; and about 9 m. north of Manistee is See also:Portage Lake (about 2 M. See also:long and 1 m. wide), a fishing resort and harbour of See also:refuge (with a good channel from Lake Michigan), connected with the city by steamboat and railway. Manistee has large See also:lumber interests, is the centre of an extensive See also:fruit-growing region, and has various manufactures, including lumber and See also:salt' The See also:total value of the factory product in 1904 was $3,256,601. The See also:municipality owns and operates its waterworks. Manistee (the name being taken from a former See also:Ottawa See also:Indian See also:village, probably on Little See also:Traverse See also:Bay, ,Mich.) was settled about 1849, and was chartered as a city in 1869, the See also:charter of that See also:year being revised in 189o.
