He had a See also:passion for travelling, and this he combined throughout his See also:life with the See also:production of literature. After journeying in Switzer-See also:land, See also:Belgium and See also:Holland, he was attached in 1835 to the See also:Arctic expedition of the " Recherche "; and after a couple of years at See also:Rennes as See also:professor of See also:foreign literature, he visited (1842) See also:Russia, (1845) See also:Syria, (1846) See also:Algeria, (1848–1849) See also:North and See also:South See also:America, and numerous volumes from his See also:pen were the result. In 187o he was elected to the See also:Academy, and he was for many years prominently identified with the Sainte-See also:Genevieve library. He did much to encourage the study of Scandinavian literature in See also:France, See also:publishing See also:translations of See also:Holberg, Oehlenschlager and others. He died in See also:Paris on the rrth of See also:October 1892.
