It was largely due to Miramon's support of the ecclesiastical party against See also:Alvarez and See also:Comonfort that See also:Zuloaga was raised to the See also:presidency; and in 1859 he was called to succeed him in that See also:office. Decisively beaten by the Liberals in 186o, he spent some See also:time in See also:Europe advocating, See also:foreign intervention in Mexican affairs; and returned as a See also:partisan of Maximilian. His ability as a soldier was shown by his See also:double See also:defence of See also:Puebla in 1856.
