PUEBLA , a See also:

It is bounded N. and E. by the state of See also:Vera Cruz, S. by the states of See also:Oaxaca and See also:Guerrero, and W. by the states of See also:Morelos, Mexico, See also:Tlaxcala and See also:Hidalgo. See also:Area, 12,204 sq. m. Pop. (1900), 1,021,133, largely civilized See also:Indians. Lofty mountains overlook the plateau from the See also:north-east and See also:west, three of the highest peaks, See also:Orizaba, See also:Popocatepetl and Ixtaccihuatl rising above the permanent See also:snow-See also:line, while another, Malinche, lifts its isolated See also:mass nearly to that limit. In the south the table-land breaks away and See also:long fertile valleys See also:lead downward toward the warm See also:southern plains. The central table-land forms part of the See also:watershed between the eastern and western drainage systems, some of the streams in the north and south-east emptying into the Gulf of Mexico, while the Atoyac, which has its source in Tlaxcala, crosses the state and discharges into the Pacific through the Mescala. Puebla has a temperate, healthful See also:climate, one of the best in Mexico. The See also:soil is generally fertile and the rainfall abundant. See also:Agriculture is the See also:principal See also:industry. The Mexican, Interoceanic and Mexican Southern See also:railways See also:cross the state and afford ample transportation facilities.
