The state consists mainly of an undulating See also:plain, nowhere of See also:great fertility and in many parts barren; it is interspersed with rocky hills, especially in the See also:south-See also:west. See also:Granite and See also:laterite are quarried, red ochre is worked, and See also:silk and See also:cotton fabrics, See also:bell-See also:metal vessels and perfumes are among the See also:principal manufactures. There is also some export See also:trade in groundnuts and tanning bark. The See also:chief, whose See also:title is tondaman, is of the Kallan or robber See also:caste. His ancestors received a See also:grant of territory for loyal services to the British during the See also:wars in the Carnatic at the end of the ,8th See also:century. Estimated See also:gross See also:revenue, £8o,000; no See also:tribute. The state has for some years past been well administered under a See also:council, with a representative See also:assembly. The See also:town of Pudukkottai had a See also:population in 1901 of 20,347.
