They are a prosperous, sedentary tribe, claim kinship with the See also:Ababda, and speak Arabic, but are of very mixed See also:blood. Next to Birti their See also:chief See also:settlement is at Salamat. Both places are on the See also:left See also:bank of the Nile. It was by Monassir tribesmen that See also:Colonel J. D. H. See also:Stewart, See also:Gordon's comrade at See also:Khartum, was murdered in 1884.
