After serving in See also:India with his See also:regiment (37th See also:Foot) he returned to See also:England in 1873, having exchanged into the 3rd See also:Dragoon See also:Guards. In 1877 he entered the See also:staff See also:college and also the Inner See also:Temple. In 1878 he was sent out to See also:South See also:Africa, served in the Zulu See also:War and against Sikukuni. As See also:chief staff officer under Sir G. See also:Pomeroy See also:Colley he was See also:present at See also:Majuba (Feb. 27, 1881), where he was made prisoner by a See also:Boer See also:patrol and detained until the end of See also:March. In See also:August 1882 he was placed on the staff of the See also:cavalry See also:division in See also:Egypt. After Tel-el-Kebir (See also:Sept. 13, 1882) he headed a brilliant advance upon See also:Cairo, and took See also:possession of the See also:town and citadel.

He was three times mentioned in despatches, and made a See also:

brevet-See also:colonel, C.B., and aide-de-See also:camp to the See also:queen. In See also:January 1884 he was sent to See also:Suakin in command of the cavalry under Sir Gerald See also:Graham, and took See also:part as brigadier in the actions from El Teb to the advance on Tamaneb. His services were recognized by the See also:honour of K.C.B., and he was assistant See also:adjutant and Q.M.G. in the south-eastern See also:district in England from See also:April to See also:September 1884. He then joined the expedition for the See also:relief of See also:Khartum, and in See also:December, when See also:news from See also:Gordon decided See also:Lord See also:Wolseley to send a See also:column across the See also:desert of Metemma, Stewart was entrusted with the command. On the 16th of January 1885, he found the enemy in force near the See also:wells of See also:Abu Klea, and brilliantly repulsed their fierce See also:charge on the following See also:morning. Leaving the wounded under guard, the column moved forward on the 18th through bushy See also:country towards Metemma, 23 M. off. Meanwhile the enemy continued their attacks, and on the morning of the 19th Stewart was wounded and obliged to See also:hand over the command to Sir See also:Charles See also:Wilson. He lingered for nearly a See also:month, living See also:long enough to hear of his promotion to the See also:rank of See also:major-See also:general " for distinguished service in the See also:field." He died on the way back from Khartum to Korti on the 16th of See also:February, and was buried near the wells of Jakdul.
