In 1851 he was taken by his parents to See also:America, where they originally settled in See also:Connecticut, but in 1855 removed to Tama See also:county See also:Iowa. He studied at Iowa See also:College, and in 1861 became a See also:farmer. He was a Republican member of the See also:state See also:House of Representatives in 1868—1873, and was its See also:speaker in 1872—1873, and he was a member of the See also:National House of Representatives from 1873 to 1877 and again in 1883—1885. From 1870 to 1874 he was a See also:regent of the State University of Iowa; in 1877—1883 was a member of the Iowa State Railway See also:Commission, and from 1890 to 1897 was See also:professor of See also:agriculture at the Iowa Agricultural College, at See also:Ames, and director of the State Agricultural Experiment Station. In See also:March 1897 he became Secretary of Agriculture in See also:President See also:McKinley's See also:Cabinet and served into President See also:Taft's See also:administration, holding See also:- OFFICE (from Lat. officium, " duty," " service," a shortened form of opifacium, from facere, " to do," and either the stem of opes, " wealth," " aid," or opus, " work ")
