He entered the See also:United States See also:navy in See also:March 1798 as See also:lieutenant on the See also:frigate " United States," and in 1800, when in command of the " Experiment," took the See also:French privateers " Deux Amis " and " Diane." In 1802–4 he served against See also:Tripoli, first as executive officer of the " See also:Constellation " and then as See also:commander of the " See also:Siren." In 18o6 he became a See also:captain. From 18o8 to 1812 he was in the merchant service, but on the outbreak of hostilities against See also:Great See also:Britain returned to the navy, and with Commander See also:- WILLIAM

Placed in the command of the " Constellation," he was closely blockaded at See also:Norfolk, See also:Virginia. In 1813 he was placed in command of the " Constitution," and in See also:February 1815 captured the " Cyane " and the " See also:Levant," though the" Levant "was retaken. Later he commanded the Mediterranean See also:squadron, the Pacific squadron, the See also:home squadron and the Philadelphia navy yard. He was retired in 18J5, and became See also:rear-See also:admiral on the retired See also:list in 1862. He died in See also:Bordentown, New See also:Jersey, on the 6th of See also:November 1869.
