Educated at See also:schools at Findhorn, See also:Dufftown and See also:Elgin, and at See also:Aberdeen University, he entered the See also:Bengal See also:army in 1840, and served in 18J4 and 1855 in the frontier expeditions against the Mohmands, and Afridis Aka and See also:Bari Khel (See also:medal and clasp). In the See also:Indian See also:Mutiny in 18J7 Stewart, after a famous ride from See also:Agra to See also:Delhi with despatches, served on the See also:staff at the See also:siege and See also:capture of Delhi and of See also:Lucknow, and afterwards through the See also:campaign in See also:Rohilkhand (medal and two clasps, and See also:brevet-See also:major and See also:lieutenant-See also:colonel). For nine years he was assistant and See also:deputy-See also:adjutant-See also:general of the Bengal army, commanded the Bengal See also:brigade in the Abyssinian expedition in 1867 (medal and C'.B.), and became a major-general in 1868. He reorganized the penal See also:settlement of the Andaman Islands, where he was commandant when See also:Lord See also:Mayo was assassinated, and, after holding the See also:Lahore command, was promoted lieutenant-general in 1877, and commanded the See also:Kandahar field force in the Afghan See also:War in 1878 (K.C.B. and thanks of See also:parliament). In 188o he made a difficult march from Kandahar to See also:Kabul, fighting on the' way the battles of Ahmed Khel and Urzu, and held supreme military and See also:civil command in See also:northern See also:Afghanistan. On See also:hearing of the See also:Maiwand disaster, he despatched Sir See also:Frederick See also:Roberts with a See also:division on his celebrated march from Kabul to Kandahar, and himself led the See also:rest of the army back to See also:India by the Khyber Pass (medal with clasp, G.C.B., C.I.E., baronetcy, and thanks of parliament). Promoted general in 1881, he was for five years See also:commander-in-See also:chief in India, and afterwards member of the See also:council of the secretary of See also:state for India until his See also:death. He was made G.C.S.I. in 1885, promoted to be field marshal iu 1894, and appointed See also:governor of See also:Chelsea See also:Hospital in 1895. He died at See also:Algiers on the 26th of March 1000. See G. R.
