PLYMOUTH , a See also:municipality and seaport on the See also:west See also:coast of See also:North See also:Island, New See also:Zealand, See also:capital of the provincial See also:district of Taranaki, 258, m. N.N.W. of See also:Wellington by See also:rail. Pop. (1906) 5141. The See also:town slopes to the ocean, with a background of See also:forest surmounted by the See also:snow-clad volcanic See also:cone of See also:Mount See also:Egmont (8270 ft.). The district is not unjustly termed " the See also:garden of New Zealand." It is highly fertile, cereals and fruits growing well; and See also:dairy products are extensively exported. In the town are See also:leather-See also:works, See also:timber-works and See also:flour-See also:mills, with freezing-works for export dairy produce. The See also:settlement was founded in 1841 by the Plymouth See also:Company under the auspices of the New Zealand Company, and chiefly consisted of emigrants from See also:Devonshire and See also:Cornwall. On the seashore in the neighbourhood are extensive deposits of ironsand.
