NORTHWICH , a See also:

market See also:town in the Northwich See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Cheshire, See also:England, 1712 M. N.W. of See also:London, on the London and See also:North-Western railway and the Cheshire lines. Pop. of See also:urban See also:district, 17,611. It lies in a See also:low open valley at the confluence of the See also:rivers See also:Weaver and Dane, and is the centre of the See also:principal See also:salt-producing district in the See also:United See also:Kingdom. In its narrow and irregular streets many of the houses are strongly bolted to keep them secure from the subsidences which result not infrequently from the pumping of brine. Despite these precautions many accidents have occurred; some of the houses have sunk or stand at fantastic angles, and in 1892 a portion of the High See also:Street, which had subsided below the level of the Weaver, had to be raised 6 ft. Both See also:rock salt and See also:white salt obtained by evaporation from brine are exported. The amount supplied by the whole district, which includes the neighbouring town of See also:Winsford 6 m. See also:south, is about 1, foo,000 tons annually. The white salt is shipped chiefly to See also:America. The principal buildings are the See also:church of St See also:Helen, Witton, noted for its finely carved roof of the 17th See also:century, a museum and See also:free library and market See also:house. The Verdin See also:Park was presented to the town by See also:Robert Verdin, M.P. for Northwich, in 1887. There is a considerable See also:industry in the See also:building of See also:flat boats to convey salt to See also:Liverpool, the See also:river Weaver being navigable, and connected by a See also:hydraulic lift, 1 m. from the town, with the See also:Trent and See also:Mersey See also:Canal on a higher level.
