W. by N. of See also:Burnley by the Lancashire and See also:Yorkshire railway. Pop. (1901), 12,205. It lies in a See also:wild and dreary district on the precipitous See also:banks of the See also:Calder. It possesses large See also:cotton See also:mills, and quarries and See also:coal-mines are worked in the immediate neighbourhood. The See also:church of St Leonard, founded before 1451, was frequently altered before it was rebuilt in 1866–1868 in the Perpendicular See also:style. Padiham in 1251 was a See also:manor in the See also:possession of See also:Edmund de See also:Lacy.
