An See also:attempt was first made to establish a See also:national See also:government in the name of the See also:imbecile See also:Joanna, who was then residing at Tordesillas; with this view they took See also:possession of her See also:person, seized upon the See also:treasury books, archives, and See also:seals of the See also:kingdom, and stripped See also:Adrian of his regency. But the junta soon alienated the See also:nobility by the boldness with which it asserted See also:democracy and See also:total abolition of See also:privilege, while it courted defeat in the See also:field by appointing to the supreme command of its forces not Padilla but See also:Don Pedro de Giron, who had no recommendation but his high See also:birth. After the See also:army of the nobility had recaptured Tordesillas, Padilla did something to retrieve the loss by taking Torrelobaton and some other towns. But the junta, which was not fully in See also:accord with its ablest leader, neutralized this See also:advantage by granting an See also:armistice; when hostilities were resumed the commons were completely defeated near Villalar (See also:April 23, 1521), and Padilla, who had been taken prisoner, was publicly executed on the following See also:day. His wife, Dona Maria See also:Pacheco de Padilla, bravely defended Toledo against the royal troops for six months afterwards, but ultimately was compelled to take See also:refuge in See also:Portugal.
