PIANOSA (anc. S.W. Pop. (1881), 774. As its name indicates, it is quite See also:flat, and the highest point is only 95 ft. above See also:sea-level. Its See also:area is 6 sq. m. See also:Augustus banished to it his See also:grandson, See also:Agrippa Postumus, and some ruins of See also:baths near the See also:harbour still See also:bear his name. It changed hands more than once in the See also:wars between See also:Pisa and See also:Genoa in the 12th and 13th centuries; from 1390 it belonged to the See also:prince of See also:Piombino, but was depopulated in 1553 by the See also:Turkish See also:fleet, and only resettled at the beginning of the 19th See also:century. In 1857 a penal See also:colony was established here.
