POMONA , a See also:city of Los Angeles See also:county, in See also:southern See also:California, U.S.A., about 33 M. E. of the city of Los Angeles. Pop. (x850) 3634; (1900) 5526 (567 See also:foreign-See also:born); (1910) 10,207. It is served by the Southern Pacific, the See also:San Pedro, Los Angeles & See also:Salt See also:Lake, and the See also:Atchison, See also:Topeka & See also:Santa Fe See also:railways, and by an inter-See also:urban electric See also:line. The city is about 850 ft. above See also:sea-level, and has a See also:Carnegie library and several parks, including Ganesha See also:park (45 acres), which commands a See also:fine view. At See also:Claremont, about 3 M. See also:north, is Pomona See also:College (1888, co-educational), which in 1908 had 34 instructors and 488 students. Pomona is in the midst of a prosperous See also:fruit region, devoted especially to the growing of oranges. Orchards of oranges, lemons, apricots, peaches and prunes surround the city for See also:miles, and some See also:olives are grown; See also:alfalfa and See also:sugar-See also:beets are raised in large quantities in the immediate neighbourhood. Pomona was settled by a See also:colony of fruit-growers in 1875, and was chartered as a city in 1888.
