RALPH DE GUADER , See also:earl of See also:Norfolk (fl. 1070), was the son of a See also:Norman who had held high positions in See also:East Anglia, perhaps that of earl, in the reign of See also:Edward the See also:Confessor (c. 1055). His son Ralph fought on the Norman See also:side at See also:Hastings, and was made earl of Norfolk by See also:William the Conqueror. In 1075 the See also:king's refusal to See also:sanction his See also:marriage with the See also:sister of See also:Roger, earl of See also:Hereford, caused the two earls to revolt. They were easily defeated, though Ralph sent to See also:Denmark for See also:ships and went there himself to fetch them. Ralph forfeited his See also:English lands, and took See also:refuge in See also:Brittany on his wife's See also:estate. In 1076, having plotted against See also:Duke Hoel of Brittany, he was besieged at Doi, and the Conqueror came to Hoel's aid; but Ralph finally made his See also:peace. Both he and his wife took See also:part in the first crusade (1099), and died on the road to See also:Palestine.
