RAMNICU SARAT (Rimnicu Sdrat) , the See also:capital of the See also:department of Ramnicu Sarat, See also:Rumania; on the railway from See also:Buzeu to See also:Focshani, and on the See also:left See also:bank of the Ramnicu, a tributary of the Sereth. Pop. (1900) 13,134, about 1500 being See also:Jews. The See also:town rises from a marshy See also:plain, See also:east of the Carpathians, and See also:west of the cornlands of See also:southern See also:Moldavia. See also:Salt and See also:petroleum are worked in the mountains, and there is a considerable See also:trade in agricultural produce and preservedmeat. Ramnicu Sarat was the See also:scene of battles between the Moldavians and the Walachians in 1434 and 1573, and between the Walachians and See also:Turks in 1634. Here also, in 1789, an Austro-See also:Russian See also:army defeated the Turks. In 1854 the town was almost destroyed by See also:fire and was rebuilt.
