ROCROI , a See also:

town of See also:northern See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of See also:Ardennes, 22 M. N.N.W. of See also:Charleville by See also:rail, and within 2 M. of the Belgian frontier. Pop. (Igoe) town, 796; See also:commune, 2116. As a fortified See also:place it commands the Ardennes See also:plateau between the valley of the See also:Meuse and the See also:head-See also:waters of the See also:Oise. The See also:present fortifications, constructed by See also:Vauban, See also:form a pentagon and entirely See also:close in the town, which has regularly built streets converging on a central square. Overlooking the latter is the See also:church, a florid See also:building of the 18th See also:century. Rocroi is the seat of a sub-See also:prefect and has a tribunal of first instance. The place, originally called Croix-de-See also:Rau or Rau Croix, was fortified in the 16th century and besieged by the imperialists in 1555• Invested by the Spaniards in 1643, it was relieved by See also:Louis II., the See also:duke of See also:Enghien (afterwards the See also:Great-See also:Conde), after a brilliant victory. Captured in 1658 by the same duke, then in the See also:Spanish service, it was not restored to France till the treaty of the See also:Pyrenees in 1659. In 1815 Rocroi was besieged for a See also:month by the See also:allies.
