SCHWEIDNITZ , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Silesia, picturesquely situated on the See also:left See also:bank of the Weistritz, 28 m. S.W. of See also:Breslau by See also:rail. Pop. (1905) 30,540. The town has wide streets and contains several old churches, one of which, a See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:church, built in the 14th See also:century, has a See also:tower 330 ft. high. It has an old town See also:hall, a See also:theatre and several statues of eminent men. The surrounding See also:country is fertile and highly cultivated, and the large quantities of See also:flax and See also:hemp there raised encourage an active See also:weaving See also:industry in the town. Beetroot for See also:sugar, See also:grain and See also:fruit are also grown. The. manufacture of woollens, linens, See also:hosiery, See also:furniture, gloves, See also:paper, machinery and tools, carriages, nuts and screws, needles and other hardware goods is carried on. The See also:beer of Schweidnitz has See also:long been famous under the name of " Schwarze Schops," and in the 16th century it was exported as far as See also:Italy. Schweidnitz is the See also:chief grain See also:market of the See also:district. Schweidnitz, dating from about the 11th century, received civic rights in 1250.

About 1278 it became the See also:

capital of a principality, with an See also:area of about Iwo sq. m., which belonged to Bohemia from 1353 till 1741, when it passed into the See also:possession of See also:Prussia. The " Polerei of Schweidnitz " is the name given to the riotous revolt of, the town, in 1520-1522, against a royal See also:edict depriving it of the right of coining its own See also:money, One of the strongest towns in Silesia it was besieged several times during the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1807 it was captured by the See also:French, who demolished the fortifications. Restored to Prussia in 1816 it was again fortified, but in 1862 the fortifications were converted into a public See also:park. See F. J. HI I would like to know a great deal more about the town during the course of the 7 years war . I know old Fritz built a number of out lying defences around the town ... are there any 'drawings' or maps showing their layout ?? regards JOHN WITHILL
