(1900) 18,202, of whom 2703 were See also:foreign-See also:born; (1910 U.S. See also:census) 19,588. Shamokin is served by the See also:Philadelphia & See also:Reading, the See also:Northern Central, and two interurban See also:railways. There are two parks. The See also:mining and See also:shipping of See also:anthracite See also:coal and the manufacture of See also:silk goods and of See also:hosiery and knit goods are the borough's See also:principal See also:industries, but it has, also, foundries and See also:machine shops, and manufactories of See also:powder, powder-kegs, shirts, overalls, hooks and eyes, See also:brick, See also:flour and dressed See also:lumber. The See also:total value of its factory product in 1905 was $1,443,915. The borough was named from Shamokin Creek; the name is probably a See also:mutilation of a See also:Delaware See also:Indian word meaning "full of eels." The Indian See also:village named Shamokin was on the site of the See also:present See also:Sunbury, Pa. Shamokin was formed in 1852 by the See also:union of two villages, Groveville and See also:Mary See also:Ann. It was incorporated as a borough in 1864.
