SHILLONG , a See also:town of See also:British See also:India, in the Khasi Hills See also:district of Eastern See also:Bengal and See also:Assam. It is situated in 25° 34' N. and 91° 53' E., on a See also:plateau 4978 ft. above the See also:sea, 63 m. by See also:cart-road S. of See also:Gauhati, on the See also:Brahmaputra. Pop. (1901) 8384. Shillong practically See also:dates from 1864, when the district See also:head-quarters were transferred from See also:Cherrapunji. It was chosen as the seat of See also:government in 1874i when the See also:province of Assam was constituted. Every one of the public buildings and houses that quickly See also:grew up was levelled to the ground by the See also:great See also:earth-quake of the 12th of See also:June 1897, but they have since been rebuilt. Cantonments are provided for a See also:battalion of Gurkhas with two guns, and Shillong is the headquarters of the Assam See also:brigade of the 8th See also:division of the See also:Northern See also:army. There are a government high school and a training school for masters. The Welsh Presbyterian See also:mission i; active in promoting See also:education. Since 1905, when See also:Dacca became the See also:capital of the new province of Eastern Bengal and Assam, Shillong has declined in importance; but it is still the summer See also:residence of the government and the headquarters of the district.
