English See also:silver See also:coin of the value of twelve pence. The origin of the word is somewhat obscure. There was an Anglo-Saxon coin termed stilling, or scylling, See also:worth about fivepence, which is said to be derived from a See also:Teutonic See also:root, skil, to See also:divide, +See also:ling on the See also:analogy of See also:farthing (q.v.). The silver shilling was first struck in 1504, in the reign of See also:Henry VII. In See also:Charles II.'s reign shillings were first issued with milled edges. In See also:George IV.'s reign were issued the so-called " See also:lion shillings," bearing the royal See also:crest, a crowned lion on a See also:crown, a See also:design reverted to in the coinage of See also:Edward VII. A shilling is token See also:money merely, it is nominally in value the one-twentieth of a See also:pound, but one See also:troy pound of silver is coined into sixty-six shillings, the See also:standard See also:weight of each shilling being 87.27 grains.
