metropolitan See also:borough of See also:London, See also:England, bounded N.W. by See also:Islington, N.E. by See also:Hackney, E. by Bethnal See also:Green and See also:Stepney, S. by the See also:City of London, and W. by See also:Finsbury. Pop. (1901), 118,637. It is a poor and crowded See also:district extending See also:east and See also:west of Kingsland Road, and has a large See also:artisan See also:population. See also:Chain-making, See also:cabinet See also:work, and other See also:industries are carried on. An old See also:form of the name is Soersditch, and the ofigin is lost, though See also:early tradition connects it with Jane See also:Shore, See also:mistress of See also:Edward IV. The See also:parliamentary borough of Shoreditch includes the Hoxton and Haggerston divisions, each returning one member. In Hoxton is the Shoreditch technical See also:institute. The borough See also:council consists of a See also:mayor, 7 aldermen and 42 councillors. See also:Area, 657.6 acres.
