SILCHESTER , a See also:

parish in the See also:north of See also:Hampshire, See also:England, about to m. S. of See also:Reading, containing the site of the Romano-See also:British See also:town Calleva Atrebatum. This site has been lately explored (1890-1909) and the whole See also:plan of the See also:ancient town within the walls recovered; unfortunately the excavators had to abandon their task before the suburbs, cemeteries and what-ever else may See also:lie outside the walls have been examined. The results are published in Archaeologia, the See also:official See also:organ of the See also:London Society of Antiquaries (see See also:BRITAIN: See also:Roman). As the excavations proceeded, the areas excavated were covered in again, but the ruins of the town See also:hall, which have been famous since the 12th See also:century, still remain. The smaller and movable See also:objects found in the excavations have been deposited by the See also:duke of See also:Wellington, owner of the site of Calleva, in the Reading museum.
