SIRHIND , a See also:tract of See also:land in the See also:Punjab, See also:India. It consists of the See also:north-eastern portion of the See also:plain between the See also:Jumna and See also:Sutlej See also:rivers, and is watered by the Sirhind See also:canal. Sirhind is not an administrative See also:division, but historically the name includes the districts of See also:Umballa, See also:Ludhiana, and Ferozepore, together with the states of See also:Patiala, See also:Jind and See also:Nabha. The Sirhind canal serves the Umballa and Ludhiana districts, and the Patiala, Jind and Nabha states. It draws its See also:water-See also:supply from the Sutlej near See also:Rupar, where the See also:head-See also:works are situated. The canal, which was opened in 1882, has 538 M. of See also:main and See also:branch canals, and irrigates nearly 2000 sq. m. The See also:town of Sirhind, in the See also:state of Patiala, had a See also:population in 1901 of 5415. It is of very See also:early, but uncertain, See also:foundation, and had a See also:period of See also:great prosperity under the Moguls. Its See also:ancient ruins See also:cover a large extent, and include two See also:fine domed tombs of the 14th See also:century. It is held accursed by the Sikhs, owing to the barbarous See also:murder of the son of Guru Govind by the See also:Mahommedan See also:governor in 1704.
