S. of the See also:city of Novgorod, on the See also:river Polista, by means of which and See also:Lake Ilmen it is brought into steamer communication with St ' See also:Petersburg. Pop., 15,234. Brine springs on the See also:east of the town were used as a source for the See also:supply of See also:salt as See also:late as 1865; at See also:present they' are used only as See also:mineral See also:waters (temperature 51- 54° F.), having a See also:great „ resemblance to those of See also:Kreuznach in See also:Germany. Some thousands of visitors resort to them every summer, and owing to this circumstance Staraya Russa is better built and better kept than any other town in the government of Novgorod. The inhabitants are supported chiefly by the summer visitors. There is a See also:trade in See also:rye, oats and See also:flax shipped to St Petersburg. The name of Staraya Russa occurs in See also:Russian See also:annals as far back as 1167. It belonged to the See also:republic of Novgorod, and suffered continually in the See also:wars between Russia, Lithuania and See also:Livonia. It was afterwards annexed to See also:Moscow.
