He read See also:philosophy and See also:philology at the university of See also:Berlin, where he graduated in 185o. From 1852 to 1855 he studied See also:Chinese (See also:language and literature) in See also:Paris, and in 1863 became extraordinary See also:professor of philology at Berlin. In his philosophic theories he sympathized with See also:Moritz See also:Lazarus, in See also:conjunction with whom he founded in 1859 the Zeitschrift See also:fur Volkerpsychologie and Sprachwissenschaft. Like Lazarus and the Herbartian school in See also:general, he attached supreme value to See also:psychology, and especially to the psychology of society, the study of which, combined with See also:comparative philology, alone could give trustworthy results. In philology he was an admirer and See also:disciple of Wilhelm von See also:Humboldt, on whose methods he wrote several books.
