SUKKUR, or SA ,See also:KHAR, a See also:town and See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in See also:Sind, Bombay. The town is situated on the right See also:bank of the See also:Indus, 24 M. N.W. of Skikarpur. Pop. (1901), 31,316. Sukkur has always commanded the See also:trade of Sind, and the See also:river is now crossed by a See also:cantilever See also:bridge carrying the See also:North-Western railway to See also:Kotri. The town was ceded to the See also:Khairpur mirs between 1809 and 1824. In 1833 Shah Shuja defeated the Talpurs here with See also:great loss. In 1842 it came under British See also:rule. The DISTRICT OF SUI IcUR was created in 1901 out of See also:part of See also:Shikarpur district, the See also:remainder of which was formed into the district of Larkana. See also:Area, 5403 sq. m. It is chiefly alluvial See also:plain, but there are slight hills at Sukkur and Rohri.

In the higher-lying parts are See also:

salt lands (Kalar), or even See also:desert in the area known as the Registan. The See also:climate is hot, dry and enervating. The See also:annual rainfall at Sukkur town averages only 41 in. The See also:population in 1901 was 523,345, showing an increase of Io% in the See also:decade. A considerable part of the district is irrigated, the See also:principal crops being See also:wheat, millets, See also:rice, pulses and oil seeds. Earthen, leathern and See also:metal See also:ware, See also:cotton See also:cloth and tussore See also:silk are manufactured, also See also:pipe-See also:bowls, See also:snuff-boxes and See also:scissors. Lines of the North-Western railway serve the district, and there is a See also:branch from Sukkur towards See also:Quetta.
