THATON , a See also:

town and See also:district in the See also:Tenasserim See also:division of See also:Lower See also:Burma. The town is situated below a See also:hill range, Io m. from the See also:sea. It was formerly the See also:capital of the See also:Talaing See also:kingdom and a sea-See also:port. Pop. (1901) 14,342. The district has an See also:area of 5079 sq. m.; pop. (1901) 343,510, showing an in-crease of 29 per cent. in the See also:decade. It was formerly a sub-division of See also:Amherst district, but was formed in 1895 out of See also:part of that and of Shwegyin district, which has now ceased to exist. The See also:staple See also:crop is See also:rice, but a See also:good See also:deal of See also:tobacco also is grown. The railway from See also:Pegu to See also:Martaban, recently opened, passes through this district and is calculated to increase its prosperity and See also:population.
