TOILET , the See also:

process or operation of dressing, also See also:dress and its See also:appurtenances, also applied, especially in the See also:French See also:form " toilette," to a particular See also:costume worn by a See also:lady. The word is adapted from French toilette, a diminutive of toile, See also:cloth, Latin Lela, See also:web, See also:woven cloth, from See also:root of texere, to weave; this word survives in the See also:English " toils," See also:net, snare.' The earliest use of " toilet " and toilette is for a cloth, usually of See also:linen or other See also:fine material spread over a table when used to hold the looking-See also:glass and all the other articles used in dressing, or for a small See also:sheet or cloth thrown over the shoulders of a See also:person while being shaved or having his or her See also:hair dressed. It was thus applied especially to the various articles collectively which form the apparatus of a toilet-table or dressing-table. Dressing-tables or toilettes were articles of domestic See also:furniture on which the 18th See also:century See also:cabinet makers and ebenistes of See also:France lavished _their decorative See also:art. The escritoire and toilette combined which belonged to See also:Marie Antoinette is in the See also:Victoria and See also:Albert Museum, See also:South See also:Kensington (see FURNITURE, See also:Plate IV., fig. 4). ' " Toil, " labour, fatigue, weariness, must of course be distinguished. The M. Eng. toilen appears to mean to pull, struggle, and is probably related to Scots toilyie, broil, and to Fr. touiller, to entangle, shuffle together, smear. It is, however, usually referred to " till," to cultivate, O. Eng. tiolian, from til, profitable, cf. Ger.
