TORRE DEL See also:GRECO , a seaport of See also:Campania, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Naples, 71 M. S.E. of that See also:city by See also:rail. Pop. (1961), 35,328. It lies at the See also:south-See also:west See also:foot of See also:Vesuvius, on the See also:shore of the See also:Bay of Naples. It is built chiefly of See also:lava, and stands on the lava stream of 1631, which destroyed two-thirds of the older See also:town. See also:Great damage was done by the eruptions of 1737 and 1794; the See also:earthquake of 1857 and the eruption of the 8th of See also:December 1861 were even more destructive. After each dis, See also:aster the See also:people returned, the See also:advantage of the See also:rich volcanic See also:land overcoming apprehensions of danger. In the outskirts are many beautiful villas and gardens. The town has See also:shipbuilding yards and lava quarries. The inhabitants take See also:part in the See also:coral and sponge fishing off the See also:African and Sicilian coasts, and coral is worked in the town. There is also fishing for See also:tunny, sardines and oysters; See also:hemp is See also:woven, and the neighbourhood is famed for its See also:fruit and See also:wine. In See also:June the great popular festival " Dei Quattro Altari " is annually celebrated here in See also:commemoration of the abolition of the feudal dominion in 1700.
