TREGUIER , a See also:

port of western See also:France, in the See also:department of See also:Cotes-du-See also:Nord, 36 m. N.W. of St Brieuc by road. Pop. (1906), 2605. The port is situated about 52 m. from the See also:English Channel at the confluence of two streams that See also:form the Treguier See also:river; it carries on fishing and a See also:coasting and small See also:foreign See also:trade. The See also:cathedral, remarkable in having three towers over the See also:transept, one of which is surmounted by a See also:fine See also:spire, See also:dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. It contains the sumptuous See also:modern See also:mausoleum of St Yves (d. 1303), a See also:canon of the cathedral, the See also:building of which was largely due to him. To the See also:south of the See also:church there is a See also:cloister (latter See also:half of the 15th See also:century) with graceful arcades. There is a statue of Ernest See also:Renan, a native of the See also:town. Saw-milling, See also:boat-building and See also:flax-stripping are carried on, together with trade in cereals, See also:cloth, potatoes, &c. Treguier (Trecorum), which dates from the 6th century, See also:grew up See also:round a monastery founded by St Tugdual.

In the 9th century it became the seat of a bishopric, suppressed in 1790.
