TUG UEGARAO , a See also:

town and the See also:capital of the See also:province of Cagayan, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on the Grande de Cagayan See also:River, about 6o m. from its mouth. Pop. (1903), 16,105. Many of Tuguegarao's buildings—See also:government, religious, business and residential—are of See also:stone or See also:brick. There are a Dominican See also:college for boys, a See also:convent school for girls, and See also:good public See also:schools, including a high school. The river is navigable to Tuguegarao for vessels of See also:light See also:draught; the Cagayan Valley is the See also:great See also:tobacco-producing region of the Philippines; and Tuguegarao is an important See also:shipping point for tobacco. See also:Local business is largely in the hands of See also:Chinese merchants; See also:Spanish and See also:German companies See also:control the exportation of tobacco. The town was settled in 1794, and the old See also:church and See also:bell See also:tower are still See also:standing. The local dialects are Cagayan, and, of less importance, Ilocano and Tagalog.
