TURNHOUT , a See also:

town of See also:Belgium, in the See also:province of See also:Antwerp, 26 m. N.E. of that See also:city. Pop. (1904), 22,162. It carries on an active See also:industry in See also:cloth and other manufactures. There is a breeding See also:establishment for leeches. The hotel de ville was formerly a See also:palace of the See also:dukes of See also:Brabant. Two See also:miles See also:west of Turnhout is the curious penal or reformatory See also:colony of Merxplas (pop. in 1904, 2827). The See also:system of this establishment is to allow certain approved prisoners to follow their usual occupations within a defined See also:area. The persons detained have See also:complete See also:liberty of See also:movement, subject to the two conditions that they are under the supervision of guardians and are not allowed to See also:cross the boundaries of the See also:settlement. They also See also:wear a distinct See also:dress, and each prisoner bears a number.
