UMBER , a See also:

brown See also:mineral pigment consisting of hydrated See also:iron and See also:manganese oxides. The finely-powdered mineral is known as raw umber; when calcined the beauty of the See also:colour increases and the pigment is known as burnt umber. It was probably first obtained from See also:Umbria in See also:Italy, but it occurs in many localities, notably in See also:Cyprus (See also:Turkey umber); large quantities of See also:English umber are See also:mined in See also:Devonshire and See also:Cornwall.
