city of See also:north-eastern See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Barcelona, on the See also:river Gurri, a small right-See also:hand tributary of the Ter, and on the Granollers-Ripoll railway. Pop. (1900) 11,628. Vich is an See also:ancient episcopal city, with narrow, See also:ill-paved streets and many curious old houses irregularly built on the slope of a See also:hill, which rises above one of the See also:side valleys of the Ter See also:basin. The See also:cathedral, founded about 1040 and built chiefly in the r4th See also:century, was to some extent modernized in 1803. Its See also:Gothic cloisters (1340) are remarkable for the beautiful See also:tracery in their windows, and there is a See also:fine See also:altar of sculptured See also:marble. Some valuable See also:manuscripts are preserved in the library of the See also:chapter-See also:house, and the museum contains an interesting archaeological collection, besides statuary, pictures, &c. The city is locally celebrated for the manufacture of sausages; other See also:industries include tanning and the See also:weaving of See also:linen and woollen fabrics. Vich, the Ausa of the ancient geographers, was the See also:chief See also:town of the Ausetani; in the See also:middle ages it was called Ausona and Vicus Ausonensis, hence Vic de Osona, and simply Vich.
