Oxford, and owing principally to the fact that he was a See also:nephew of See also:Simon See also:Islip, See also:archbishop of Canterbury, he received numerous ecclesiastical preferments; he held prebends at See also:Lichfield, See also:Chichester and See also:Lincoln, and livings at Ivychurch, See also:Croydon and Cliffe. Later he was appointed See also:vicar-See also:general, and then See also:dean of the See also:court of See also:arches by Islip. In 1360 he became bishop of See also:Rochester, and two years later bishop of See also:Worcester. In 1368 Whittlesea was elected archbishop of Canterbury in See also:succession to Simon See also:Langham, but his See also:term of See also:- OFFICE (from Lat. officium, " duty," " service," a shortened form of opifacium, from facere, " to do," and either the stem of opes, " wealth," " aid," or opus, " work ")
office was very uneventful, a circumstance due partly, but not wholly, to his feeble See also:health. He died at See also:Lambeth on the 5th or 6th of See also:June 1374.
