WINBURG , a See also:

town in the See also:Orange See also:Free See also:State, 90 M. N.E. by See also:rail of See also:Bloemfontein. Pop. (1904) 2762, of whom 1003 were whites. It is built by the See also:banks of a tributary of the See also:Vet affluent of the See also:Vaal, and is a trading centre for a large See also:grain and See also:pastoral See also:district. It is joined to the See also:trunk railway from See also:Port See also:Elizabeth to the See also:Transvaal by a See also:branch See also:line from Smaldeel, 28 m. N.W. The town was founded in 1837 by Commandant H. See also:Potgieter, one of the voortrekers, and was named by him in See also:commemoration of a victory gained over the See also:Matabele See also:chief Mosilikatze. It became the See also:capital of a quasi-See also:independent See also:Boer state, which included considerable areas See also:north of the Vaal. In 1848 the town and district were annexed to See also:Great See also:Britain and thereafter followed the fortunes of the Orange See also:river See also:sovereignty (see ORANGE FREE STATE). In the Boer See also:War of 1899—1902 Winburg was one of the Boer centres in the See also:guerrilla fighting which followed the fall of See also:Pretoria.
