YOSAI [Kikuchi] (1781-1878) , See also:Japanese painter, was the son of a samurai named Kawara, of Yedo. He was adopted by the Kikuchi See also:family, who were old hereditary retainers of the See also:Tokugawa See also:clan. When eighteen, he became a See also:pupil of Takata Enjo; but, after studying the principles of the See also:Kano, Shijo, and Maruyama See also:schools—in the latter, perhaps, under Ozui, a son of Okyo—he See also:developed an See also:independent See also:style, having some See also:affinities with that of Tani Buncho. He was one of the last of the See also:great painters of See also:Japan; and his illustrated See also:history of Japanese heroes, the Zenken Kojitsu, is a remarkable specimen of his See also:power as a draughtsman in See also:black and See also:white.
