He was adopted by the Kikuchi See also:family, who were old hereditary retainers of the See also:Tokugawa See also:clan. When eighteen, he became a See also:pupil of Takata Enjo; but, after studying the principles of the See also:Kano, Shijo, and Maruyama See also:schools—in the latter, perhaps, under Ozui, a son of Okyo—he See also:developed an See also:independent See also:style, having some See also:affinities with that of Tani Buncho.
