ZEBULUN , a tribe of See also:Israel, named after See also:Jacob's See also:sixth " son " by Leah. The narrator of Gen. See also:xxx. 20 offers two etymologies of the name, from the roots z–b–d, " give," and z–b–1, " exalt (?)."' The See also:country of Zebulun See also:lay in the fertile hilly country to the See also:north of the See also:plain of See also:Jezreel, which forms the first step towards the mountains of See also:Asher and See also:Naphtali, and included the goodly upland plain of el-Battof. The description of its boundaries is obscure, owing in some measure to its position between See also:Issachar and Naphtali, with one or the other of which it is frequently combined. At one See also:period Zebulun, like See also:Dan and Asher (See also:Judges v. 17), would seem to have reached the See also:sea and bordered on Phoenician territory (Gen. xlix. 13, Deut. xxxiii. 18 seq.). In the latter passage allusion is made to a feast upon a sacred See also:mountain held by Zebulun and Issachar in See also:common, and to the See also:wealth these tribes derived from See also:commerce by sea. Zebulun had a See also:chief See also:part in the See also:war with Sisera (Judges iv. 6, v. 18; see See also:DEBORAH); it is said to have furnished at least one of the " judges," Elon the Zebulonite (Judges xii. II seq.); and the See also:prophet See also:Jonah, who foretold the victories of See also:Jeroboam II., came from the border See also:town of See also:Gath-hepher (probably the See also:modern el-Meshhed) (2 See also:Kings xiv. 25). The See also:deportation of the See also:northern tribes under Tiglath Pileser IV. (2 Kings xv. 29) appears to have included Zebulun (Isa. ix. I). See also:Nazareth lay within the territory of Zebulun but is not mentioned in the Old Testament. (S. A. Additional information and CommentsThere are no comments yet for this article.
