Abbas Hilmi See also:Pasha, See also:great-great-See also:grandson of Mehemet All, See also:born on the 14th of See also:July 1874, succeeded his See also:father, Tewfik Pasha, as khedive of Egypt on the 8th of See also:January 1892. When a boy he visited See also:England, and he had an See also:English See also:tutor for some See also:time in See also:Cairo. He then went to school in See also:Lausanne, and from there passed on to the Theresianum in See also:Vienna. In addition to See also:Turkish, his See also:mother See also:tongue, he acquired fluency in Arabic, and a See also:good conversational knowledge of English, See also:French and See also:German. He was still at See also:college in Vienna when the sudden See also:death of his father raised him to the Khedivate; and he was barely of See also:age according to Turkish See also:law, which fixes See also:majority at eighteen in cases of See also:succession to the See also:throne. For some time he did not co-operate very cordially with Great See also:Britain. He was See also:young and eager to exercise his new See also:power. His throne and See also:life had not been saved for him by the See also:British, as was the See also:case with his father. He was surrounded by intriguers who were playing a See also:game of their own, and for some time he appeared almost disposed to be as reactionary as his great-See also:uncle Abbas I. But in See also:process of time he learnt to under-stand the importance of British counsels.

He paid a second visit to England in 1900, during which he frankly acknowledged the great good the British had done in Egypt, and declared himself ready to follow their See also:

advice and to co-operate with the British officials administering See also:Egyptian affairs. The See also:establishment of a See also:sound See also:system of native See also:justice, the great remission of See also:taxation, the reconque§t of the See also:Sudan, the inauguration of the stupendous See also:irrigation See also:works at See also:Assuan, the increase of cheap, sound See also:education, each received his approval and all the assistance he could give. ,He displayed more See also:interest in See also:agriculture than in See also:state-See also:craft, and his See also:farm of See also:cattle and horses at Koubah, near Cairo, would have done See also:credit to any agricultural show in England; at Montaza, near See also:Alexandria, he created a similar establishment. He married the Princess Ikbal Hanem and had several See also:children. Mahommed Abdul Mouneim, the See also:heir-apparent, was born on the loth of See also:February 1899.
