AGUILAS , a seaport of See also:south-eastern See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Murcia, on the Mediterranean See also:Sea, at the See also:terminus of a railway from Huercal-Overa. Pop. (1900) 15,868. Aguilas is built on the landward See also:side of a small See also:peninsula, between two bays—the Puerto Ponente, a See also:good See also:harbour, on the south-See also:west, - and the Puerto Levanto, which is somewhat dangerous to See also:shipping in rough See also:weather, on the See also:north-See also:east. It is the See also:chief outlet for the See also:Spanish See also:trade in See also:esparto grass, and for the See also:iron ore and other See also:mineral products of the neighbourhood. It has also some trade in See also:fruit and See also:grain. The imports consist chiefly of See also:coal. In 1904, 296 vessels, of 238,274 tons, cleared at this See also:port.
