ALSEN (Danish Als) , an See also:island in the Baltic, off the See also:coast of See also:Schleswig, in the Little See also:Belt. It formerly belonged to See also:Denmark, but, as a result of the Danish See also:war of 1864, was incorporated with See also:Germany. Its See also:area is 105 sq. m.; the length nearly 20, and the breadth from 3 to 12 M. Pop. (1900) 25,000, most of whom speak Danish. The island is fertile, richly wooded, and yields See also:grain and See also:fruit. See also:Sonderburg, the See also:capital, with a See also:good See also:harbour and a considerable See also:trade, is connected with the mainland by a See also:pontoon See also:bridge. Other places of See also:note are Norburg and Augustenburg. On the See also:peninsula I(ekenis at the S.W. end of Alsen there is a lighthouse. Here, in 1848, the Danes directed their See also:main attack against See also:Field-See also:marshal See also:Wrangel's See also:army. In 1864 the Prussians under Herwarth von Bittenfeld took Alsen, which was occupied by 9000 Danish troops under Steinmann, thus bringing the Danish war to a See also:close. Since 1870 Alsen has been fortified.
