There are a See also:Roman See also:Catholic and two See also:Protestant churches, several high-grade See also:schools and a teachers' See also:seminary. Alzey has See also:industries of See also:dyeing and See also:weaving, breweries, and does a considerable See also:trade in See also:wine. It is immortalized in the See also:Nibelungenlied in the See also:person of " Volker von Alzeie," the See also:warrior who in the last See also:part of the epic plays a part second only to that of See also:Hagen, and who " was called the See also:minstrel (spilman) because he could See also:fiddle." It became an imperial See also:city in 1277. In 162o it was sacked by the Spaniards and in 1689 burnt by the See also:French. Annexed to See also:France during the See also:Napoleonic See also:wars, it passed in 1815 to the grand-duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt.
