APPENZELL , the See also:

political See also:capital of the Inner Rhoden See also:half of the Swiss See also:canton of Appenzell. It is built in a smiling See also:green hollow on the See also:left See also:bank of the Sitter stream, which is formed by the See also:union of several See also:mountain. torrents descending from the Santis. By See also:light See also:railways it is 122 M. from St See also:Gall past Gais or 202 M. past See also:Herisau. Its See also:chief streets are paved, but it is rather a large See also:village than a See also:town, though in 'goo it had 4574 inhabit-ants, practically all See also:German-speaking and Romanists. It has a stately See also:modern See also:parish See also:church (attached to a See also:Gothic See also:choir), a small but very See also:ancient See also:chapel of the abbots of St Gall (whose summer See also:residence was this village), and two Capuchin convents (one for men, founded in 1588, and one for See also:women, founded in 1613). Among the archives, kept in the See also:sacristy of the church, are several See also:banners captured by the Appenzellers in former days, among them one taken in 1406 at Imst, near Lanedeck, with the inscription Hundert Teufel, though popularly this number is multiplied a thousandfold. In the See also:principal square the Landsgemeinde (or cantonal democratic See also:assembly) is held annually in the open See also:air on the last See also:Sunday in See also:April. The inhabitants are largely employed in the See also:production of See also:embroidery, though also engaged in various See also:pastoral occupations. About 22 M. by road See also:south-See also:east of Appenzell is Weissbad, a well-known See also:goat's whey cure See also:establishment, while 12 See also:hours above it is the See also:quaint little chapel of Wildkirchli, built (1648) in a See also:rock cavern, on the way to the Santis.
