HERISAU , the largest See also:

town in the entire Swiss See also:canton of See also:Appenzell, built on the Glatt torrent, and by See also:light railway 7 M. See also:south-See also:west of St See also:Gall or 131 m. See also:north of Appenzell. In 2900 it had 13,497 inhabitants, mainly See also:Protestant and See also:German-speaking. The See also:lower portion of the massive See also:tower of the See also:parish See also:church (Protestant) See also:dates from the 11th See also:century or even earlier. It is a prosperous little See also:industrial town in the Ausser Rhoden See also:half of the canton, especially busied with the manufacture of See also:embroidery by machinery, and of muslins. Near it is the goats' whey cure See also:establishment of Heinrichsbad, and the two castles of Rosenberg and Rosenburg, ruined in 1403 when the See also:land See also:rose against its See also:lord, the See also:abbot of St Gall. About 5 M. to the south-See also:east is Hundwil, a See also:village of 1523 inhabitants, where the Landsgemeinde of Ausser Rhoden meets in the See also:odd years (in other years at See also:Trogen) on the last See also:Sunday in See also:April.
