George was See also:born in 1563, and after receiving a See also:good See also:education was apprenticed to his father's See also:trade. In 1586 he married the daughter of a deceased Edinburgh See also:merchant, and with the assistance of her patrimony set up in business on his own See also:account. At first he occupied a small " buith " at the See also:north-See also:east corner of St See also:Giles's See also:church, and afterwards a more pretentious See also:shop at the See also:west end of the See also:building. To the business of a goldsmith he joined that of a See also:money-lender, and in 1597 he had acquired such a reputation that he was appointed goldsmith to See also:Queen See also:Anne, See also:consort of See also:James VI. In 16o1 he became jeweller to the See also:king, and followed him to See also:London, occupying a s(1op opposite the See also:Exchange. Heriot was largely indebted for his See also:fortune to the extravagance of the queen, and the See also:imitation of this extravagance by the See also:nobility. Latterly he had such an extensive business as a jeweller that on one occasion a See also:government See also:proclamation was issued calling upon all the magistrates of the See also:kingdom to aid him in securing the workmen he required. He died in London on the loth of See also:February 1623. In 16o8, having some See also:time previously lost his first wife, he married See also:Alison See also:Primrose, daughter of James Primrose, grandfather of the first See also:earl of See also:Rosebery, but she died in 1612; by neither See also:marriage had he any issue. The surplus . of his See also:estate, after deducting legacies to his nearest relations and some of his more intimate See also:friends, was bequeathed to found a hospital for the education of freemen's sons of the See also:town of Edinburgh; and its value afterwards increased so greatly as to See also:supply funds for the erection of several Heriot See also:foundation See also:schools in different parts of the city. Heriot takes a leading See also:part in See also:Scott's novel, The Fortunes of See also:Nigel (see also the Introduction).
